Who is Estean Badenhorst?
I am a bite-of-more-than-you-can-chew type of person. I am in my final year of B.Com Law at the University of the Free State. I am a barista at Stereo Café and also owner of Extraction Coffee Bar. I like my cup of coffee. My coffee journey only started about a year and six months ago. Before that I was a strictly tea drinking individual.
What is your best childhood memory?
My best childhood memory must be playing finger rugby in the yard. Finger rugby is a game where you shoot a cork with your fingers on a miniature rugby field. My grandfather and I always made the rugby field with white rope and the rugby poles with delve sticks. I remember playing a lot of World Championships in my back yard. And of course, the Springboks won all of them.
If you had a chance for a do over in life, what would you do differently in life?
I would ask more questions. I would ask my grandfather (who passed away three years ago) more questions. There is something in a grandfather’s wisdom and I wish I had a chance to ask him a few more questions.
What do you feel most proud of?
The way I live my life. I am not someone that “goes with the flow”. I have vision of how I would like my life to be and sometimes that means swimming upstream.
I rarely do something to impress people I do not know.
If you could keep only three possessions, what would they be?
I am not a possessive person. So it is difficult to answer the question. Earthly possessions does not concern me that much. But If I have to choose three, it would be:
My cellphone(including the charger). It is a great communication device and I can stay in touch with the people I value most.
My coffee machine and all of the equipment.
My trusted stallion Jack Russel.
What do you want your tombstone want to say?
Rom 8:18 “For I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing to the glory that will be revealed in us”.
What is Extraction Coffee Bar?
Extraction Coffee Bar is a mobile coffee bar that I launched in 2017. I want to take coffee to the people, especially weddings.
What is your favorite kind of coffee?
I love my Cortados. When I am behind the machine and there is a shot of espresso and some milk leftover after a rush, I always pour myself a cortado. Quality control you know? I have grown to enjoy a cortado, so that will always be my measurement of the quality of any café’s coffee. My favorite brewing method is with a coffee machine. I love my espresso based beverages.
My favorite origin is Uganda Bugiso. Whenever we are running low on our espresso blend, the Uganda is a great substitute. For a pour over I love the Ethiopia Yirgacheffe and for a Moka Pot Brazil Santos.
In which coffee shops are we likely to bump into you?
You will find me 99% of the time in Stereo Café. If I am not behind the bar making you coffee, I will be part of the clients sitting down having a cup of coffee.
What does a perfect day look like?
In this busy life I love lazy days. So when I am not working or on a mission, my perfect day is a lazy day.
Wake up at 6 am, sit outside and get ready for the day. Go to my girlfriend at around 8am to make breakfast. We usually make something we haven’t made before and I make coffee with my home espresso machine. Watch an episode or five of masterchef. Make lunch. Watch the afternoon pass by. We will maybe go to the mall and just walk around in Woolworths and @home or any shop that catches our eye. Then in the evening we will make supper for the family and enjoy a quiet evening. We will finish the day with a cup of tea and that is a perfect lazy day.
