Shan Venter

Who is Shan Venter?

I am a wife to an incredible husband, Ett Venter. Daughter to an amazing mom and dad (Michele and Dave Black respectively). Sister to the legendary Sam Black. And up until recently, I was a high school teacher by profession. But I quit,  and am pursuing my dream of combining coffee and teaching. Exciting times ahead!

What is your best childhood memory?

Definitely burying my baby marrows with my sister outside in our garden. I hated this vegetable. We bonded very well whilst trying to achieve the common goal of getting rid of our vegetables. Still to this day, that bond has lasted and strengthened; my sister is my best friend. It would seem that vegetables really are good for you.

If you had a chance for a “do-over” in life, what would you do differently?

I have no idea. I guess I wouldn’t do anything “over again.” But what I would do is more. Kind of “add” to my life. I would live life with more exuberance, more passionately and make more time to do stuff. That is what I am trying to do now – to take this advice and apply it while I am still young.

What do you feel most proud of?

Getting married for sure. I cannot believe I got to marry the man I did, he really is incredible. Second would be quitting my job  that I really loved (I was a teacher) to try and pursue something that I have fallen in love with – coffee. This decision was the scariest one I have ever made; I cry often hahaha. BUT, if this decision leads to helping and teaching others something that has gripped my heart – man, I would be super proud.

If you could only keep three possessions, what would they be and why?

My phone. I can’t imagine being unable to take photos or listen to music.

A pillow. I love sleeping.

A jersey. I always have one anyway because I really disapprove of being cold ever.

What do you want your tombstone to say?

I don’t want a tombstone because I want to be burnt and thrown away, or as others would say: “Cremated and scattered into the ocean.” Hahaha

No, but seriously, I would love it if people could remember me as a daughter of Jesus who was full of energy and very kind to everyone she came across.

What is Pretoria Coffee Girl?

@pretoriacoffeegirl is an Instagram page that I started about 6 months ago. The page contains solid information about various coffees, baristas, and coffee shops no only within Pretoria, but throughout the world. It is also a creative outlet for me and a means of me exploring new places, coffees and knowledge.

I’ve also teamed up with @ZACoffeeArmy, which is another account which is doing something similar to what I’ve been doing with @Pretoriacoffeegirl.

What’s your favorite kind of coffee?

I have two favorites:

  1. espresso-based drink: Cortado (containing a double ristretto shot) made from green beans sourced from Burundi (@longmilescoffee) and roasted by Kevin Clark.
  2. alternative brewing: A Chemex made with beans from @rosettaroastery.

In which coffee shops are we likely to bump into you?

Vintage, Menlo Park. Vintage, Centurion. Lucky Bread, Brooklyn. I will also be in Bischop’s Roastery a lot because that is where my new work space will be from Jan.

What does a perfect day look like?

I would wake up super early, cuddle with my husband and put on some music. Breakfast and some coffee is next followed by a shower. Then off to work. Work super hard. Engage with people around me during the work day. Gym time. Go home and make some dinner. Chat to my husband and hang out a bit. And to end off the day, I would read a bit and just relax.

Or I would just go to the beach for the whole day. I love the beach. Hahaha
