Zoë Brown

Who is Zoë Brown?

I’m just an ordinary girl with an extra ordinary job. I am a presenter and the unofficial DIY’er on the Expresso morning show on SABC 3. I’m also a radio presenter on the Cape’s number one hit music station, KFM. Apart from having a career in the media industry, I’ve completed my honors in a BA International Relations degree.

What’s your best childhood memory?

One of my favourite childhood memories was created in the kitchen. I really wanted to impress my aunt and bake her a coffee cake. The recipe called for a cup of coffee to be added to the mixture and that was what I did. I added 250g of instant coffee powder to the mixture instead of making a cup (one teaspoon of coffee with hot water)! My cake came out rock-hard and completely inedible.

If you had a chance for a “do-over” in life, what would you do differently?

They say that hindsight is perfect vision, although I don’t regret any decisions that I’ve made, I would however love to do-over my varsity days at the University of Stellenbosch. During my 3rd year I was working full-time at the radio station and I feel like I missed out on being a typical student. I made a lot of sacrifices and had a very limited social life. Although, I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for the hours I invested back then.

What do you feel most proud of?

I’m proud of where I am today. It wasn’t an easy road; it consisted of countless late nights and long hours. I’ve been isolated from my family. But I got here on my own. I’m proud that I’m independent and now have the platform to be able to do good.

If you could keep only 3 possessions, what would they be and why?

A photograph of my grandparents: It was taken on my parents’ wedding day and I just love how my grandparents can be seen holding hands. I lost both my grandparents early on and only have fond memories of them.

A charm bracelet: I received this bracelet from my American host family as a farewell gift. I spent 18 months as their au pair in Columbus, Ohio. I looked after their 3 kids, and became part of their family. The charms on the bracelet represent the things I loved most about the American culture as well as some of the things I experienced for the very first time. (For example there is a snowman charm, a turkey for Thanksgiving, the DC Capital, Statue of Liberty to name a few).

My external: It has all my photographs and some of my favourite movies and series! It can keep anyone entertained for weeks!

What would you want your tombstone to say?

She didn’t do 9 to 5. She did 24/7. She’s finally resting in peace.

What is zoebrown.co.za?

It is fresh and mysterious but not complicated to understand. You’ll never be bored and it constantly updates.

What’s your favorite kind of coffee?

I love trying all kinds of coffees. My current favourite is from Bean There Fair Trade Coffee. It is a ground coffee sourced from Rwanda in Musasa. It has a creamy toffee flavour with fruity aromas.

In which coffee shops are we likely to bump into you?

I love coffee shops. You can find me in Green Point at Shift Espresso Bar, or at Bootleggers in Sea Point. I also love Brownies and Downies in Lower Long Str. (they serve the best Brownies!).

What does a perfect day look like?

My perfect day starts of with everyone’s feel good breakfast show (Expresso), and then spending some time out and about in Mother Nature (hike around Lion’s Head). Then a coffee at one of my favourite coffee shops where I finish off my admin before heading home for an afternoon siesta.
