Shaun Aupiais

Who is Shaun Aupiais?

A Family Man and Passionate Coffee Geek. I have dedicated my life to educating, empowering and uplifting people to be the best individual and barista they can be. I’m a trainer for Famous Brands Coffee company in the Eastern Cape. I’ve been so privileged for the last 10 years on this journey to have been exposed to all aspects of this amazing industry, the full bean to cup process! For the last 6 years I have thoroughly enjoyed judging in the regional and national Barista Championships and latte art Compititions. Im a latte artist at heart but i beieve that ‘ Beauty is in the eye and the taste of the beholder’. I will continue to add value and promote coffee. This is more than a job to me, this is my career, passion and livelihood.

Do you have a motto by which you live your life?

‘Consistency is key’

What is your best childhood memory?

I grew up surfing on the beaches in Durban. After a long surf I would go and get a seriously large chipchow, go park off on the sand and enjoy it while staring at the ocean and the waves thinking about my next surf session.

If you had a chance for a “do-over” in life, what would you do differently?

Nothing, everything I’ve been through in life, all the interesting twists and turns, have made me the man I am today!

What do you feel most proud of?

A beautiful family that I’m so blessed to have and call my own. Also, every time I run a Red Band Barista Academy course I have the pleasure of meeting some amazing individuals that become more than students I have trained. Plus all my wonderful coffee friends I get to encounter all the time. Far too many people to mention.

If you could only keep three possessions, what would they be and why?

My cellphone, my Chemex coffee kit and my Caterpillars. You can do anything on a cell phone and stay connected with people; you got to have coffee … and everyone needs a comfortable pair of shoes to walk around in!

What do you want your tombstone to say?

Lived with Integrity and died with Honour!

What is the Red Band Barista Academy?

I have the privilege of being the head barista trainer for this awesome academy that restores purpose and hope for people that have very little. We sign up individuals out of the townships and place them on a four week barista course.  Through this process, I give them a good practical and theoretical foundation of coffee and once they have completed and passed the course we help them find a job as a barista in the coffee industry. My passion is to help the youth of South Africa as they are the future of this awesome industry.

What’s your favorite kind of coffee?

Chemex and Rwandan Coffee.

In which coffee shops are we likely to bump into you?

Everywhere. Variety is the spice of life! As long as the coffee has Balance and Complexity.

What does a perfect day look like?

Waking up in the bush in the middle of nowhere with my family, the sounds of nature – and lets not forget a great cup of coffee.

What are your greatest coffee achievements?

I was the trainer and coach for two-time South African Latte Art Champion, Byron Keet. I have been published 11 times for coffee articles I have written for Perfect Daily Grind, an international online coffee magazine/blog. I’m a Regional Cup Tasters finalist for 2016 and will be representing the Eastern Cape at the National Cup Tasters Competition in 2017.
