Shmuel Montrose

What a great time to be posting this. Because Joziblue just celebrated their 3rd birthday. I first visited Joziblue a little over a year ago. And I was so glad I did. I wrote about it here.

Who is Shmuel Montrose?

I am a father (of 2 beautiful girls), Husband, Uncle and a son and an Owner of JoziBlue. I have so many roles in life and they all blend beautifully together like the perfect coffee blend. I love to compare a coffee bean to a human being. Just like every bean has their own special story on how they came to being, so too every human has their own story. My life story is a blend of all the different experiences I have experienced with all the people that I have interacted with, and how I have reacted and internalised these experiences. This is what has made me, me. And going forward, the amazing family and friends that I have, and the awesome customers that I have, all help me in defining who I am. I like to see myself as a friendly, caring person who has a willing ear to hear your story. I am passionate about my coffee and I love connecting to people through coffee.

What is your best childhood memory?

I don’t know if it’s my best childhood memory but it definitely is a memorable one. When I was about three or four years old my parents took us to Texas to visit my Dad’s family. We were in a park and I stood in an ant hill. They were these angry, huge, red ants. And they bit me all up my leg. My parents had to rush me to hospital as it looked really freaky.

If you had a chance for a “do-over” life, what would you do differently?

I find this question really hard to answer. I believe that every experience a person lives through helps to shape and define the person into who they are. It’s very easy to have 20/20 vision looking back, but at the end of the day, if you really had to do something differently, would you? I would love to have had a different educational background. But then, I would be a totally different person today, with a different life. And I am happy today with the me that I am.

What do you feel most proud of?

That my kids are happy. That my wife is happy. That I (with my in-laws) have built a coffee shop with no background in management or coffee. That I make people happy as part of my job.

If you could keep only three possessions, what would they be?

My hearing aids, my cell phone and my coffee grinder. (ok ok ok….my coffee shop).

What do you want your tombstone to say?

Im a simple guy so I would just want it to say…here lies a man. (haha) A loving husband and father. Will be missed.

What is Jozi Blue?

Jozi Blue is a speciality coffee shop creating drinks for every individual. We pride ourselves on the quality of our coffee. We source our beans from Doubleshot, Purist, Isabella and Bean There, giving a range of high-end beans. We don’t just serve coffee, we simplify your lives by seeing what you need and meeting your requirements, without compromising quality. Check out our Facebook page JoziBlue Club.

What is your favourite kind of coffee?

That depends of the day. Anything that is strong, full body, full flavour. Such as pour over, espresso, cortado, Aero Press, Syphon, Machiato, Pico-Late and Traditional Flat white. Coffee origin… Haceinda La Esmeralda from Panama, it is my all-time favourite unfortunately we don’t have it but trying our best to get hold of some….

In which coffee shops are we likely to bump into you?

Of course Jozi Blue. Otherwise you can find me in Doubleshot, Bean There, and I try go visiting other places.

What does a perfect day look like?

Waking up to, and coming home to, a happy family. Greeting and chatting to awesome individuals who come through my shop. I love educating people on coffee and learning from others.
