Who is Brett Magill?
This is a good question, because it’s something I have been trying to figure out for the last four years or so. I guess I am still trying to figure that out.
What, I am is simple. I’m a few things, an entrepreneur, writer, artist, photographer, hiker, foodie, beerie, techie, talker and walker, so many things, the term I usually align to is multipotentialite; someone who has a vast array of interests and passions rather than specialising in something, or being moulded.
The other day, someone called me a non-conformist, before that friends used to call me trouble-maker, before that, I was told I have a problem with authority.
I always called myself an Entrepreneur, even before it was a fashion to do so, when I was six I told me teacher that I was a “business man”. So, when someone asks who Brett Magill is, let’s just say I’m an Entrepreneur, and see if it still works.
What is your best childhood memory?
I would by lying if I said I had one specific memory, I don’t feel I had a bad childhood or a crazy one, and my memory is really bad, everything comes out fuzzy! There is a memory of me being on an Airplane for the first time with my mom flying to Durban.
I don’t remember much except getting a LiquiFruit orange juice from the stewardess and passing out.
If you had a chance for a “do-over” in life, what would you do differently?
I like to think I wouldn’t have studied after high school. After I left, I realised that reading ten books a year only wasted time and added very little value to my eventual business. I learnt more in six months running my own business than I did in three years studying for my BA Degree.
But, having said that, I wouldn’t have known that unless I studied in the first place. I don’t regret studying, it did after all help me get my first job and help with some administrative ground work.
Other than that, I don’t want any do-overs, I’m very happy with the person I have become, even though I’m a work-in-progress, I wouldn’t be me without the mistakes or successes I made in the past.
What do you feel most proud of?
I am most proud of my business. It may sounds weird, but my business in some form or another is all I have ever wanted to do. And though I took a break for two years, starting my own business again was a proud moment for me.
If you could only keep three possessions, what would they be and why?
I think I would choose:
A notebook: A blank canvas to create and express in a way that is totally my own, if I need a space for thoughts, ideas, sketches or a realm to escape to, a notebook offers this all to me.
My hiking knife: A tool, weapon and a utensil. Very few things I own are this versatile and can provide so much to you when you need it.
Playing Cards: My grandfather taught me every card game he knew, playing cards is my ultimate because I can do anything with them.
What do you want your tombstone to say?

Tell us about Joburg Brew
Joburgbrew.com is my business, it’s a fully online eCommerce store that sells locally made craft beer.
Right now we stock four local beer brands: SMACK Republic, Two Okes Beer, Copperlake and Gilroys Beer, with another fifty being added throughout 2016. The store itself is going to evolve to include something of a hub for craft content as we move into the new year, 2015 was all about getting our basics right, with next year being the big push year.
The first mission of joburgbrew is to provide something different for people to taste and enjoy with their friends and family, and create a platform to connect breweries to tasters. I believe that we’re doing that, and will be getting better at it as we move forward.
To ensure quality, every bottle of beer purchased by our customers comes directly from the brewer, no middlemen, essuring quality and timeliness of delievery. Im sure one day we’ll have a warehouse to start creating some cool mixed boxes, but until, this system helps give people what they want the best.
One day, I hope we can create some kind of geo-craft-to-door app for the store, but that’s a few years off. Blink and you’ll miss it!
What’s your favorite kind of coffee, brew method or coffee origin?
I have always enjoyed freshly ground coffee, brewed in a plunger with plain milk and sugar. Though, I can’t always enjoy this or take the time to make it, deadlines drive the need forcaffeine over pleasure of a good brew, so I end up drinking Frisco.
In which coffee shops are we likely to bump into you?
I prefer rainy days, stormy or overcast doesn’t matter to me too much. I enjoy the peace of the atmosphere it creates during a shower, it calms me. Enjoying a hot cuppa and some adventure YouTube videos on a day like this is an utter win for me.
